Leader of the Indian Nationalist movement against  British rule, Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi is revered as the father of his country. He is esteemed internationally for his doctrine of nonviolence to achieve political and social progress.

On 2nd October 1869, Mahatma Gandhi was born and raised in a Hindu family in coastal Gujrat. Gandhi received an education in India before beginning law studies in England in 1888. Seeking clerical work in South Africa, he was shocked at the racial discrimination he encountered. He became an advocate for his fellow Indians, and his challenges to the government resulted in a jail sentence.

He entered politics in India in 1919 to protest British sedition laws. They were demanding a separate Muslim homeland carved out of India.

Repressed throughout World War II, Gandhi successfully negotiated for an autonomous Indian state in 1947. He was assassinated one year later.
